This is an exciting time for the London Borough of Redbridge; we are at the heart of regeneration and change in East London, with unprecedented investment in the area expected in the next few years and the Elizabeth Line is now operational opening up opportunities for new homes and jobs and the planning and building control service is at the very centre of supporting communities and driving forward change.
Redbridge is the fourth fastest growing borough in the country and is home to an exciting, dynamic and diverse community
We benefit from excellent transport links across London and Essex and our offices, based in Ilford, are only 9 minutes from Stratford and 18 minutes from Liverpool Street, in the heart of the city.
Like many boroughs, Redbridge faces the challenge of delivering growth which is both sustainable and meets the expectations of our residents and communities.
Redbridge is at an important time in its development, with a plan to review key policy documents and deliver good growth. In doing so the authority will seek to deliver on the recommendations set out in the recently completed Growth Commission and establish a sustainable vision for the borough.
Around 1/3 of the borough is designated green belt and around 48% the borough is green space
Redbridge joined the Child Friendly Cities Initiative (CFCI) led by UNICEF to better involve the future of our borough in the development of our borough.
As part of this initiative, the Planning team embedded UNICEF principles into the planning application process, while identifying and undertaking opportunities to engage with youth groups on development designs as part of the consultation process.
For example, we’re running a pilot scheme that’s working with young people to examine the public realm of a significant supermarket development. Every school put forward child ambassadors to help co-design the development.
A new focus on community engagement in planning policy enables us to increase participatory activity and embrace the collective wisdom and diversity of Redbridge’s residents. In turn, this provides us with greater transparency around growth areas and greater buy-in from residents – all in line with the recommendations from Redbridge’s Growth Commission.
